Real return formula

Real = (1 + Nominal) ÷ (1 + Inflation) − 1
= (1 + 0.1804) ÷ (1 + 0.0460) − 1
= 12.85% in purchasing-power terms

Simple subtraction (Nominal − Inflation) overstates the result; always use the ratio form above.

Note: the KPI tile at the top uses the Portfolio nominal % value typed into the latest table row, not this XIRR. Copy the MWR above into that cell so both figures match.

How to update the tracker

1 · CPI inflation

  • MOSPI releases the All-India CPI (Combined) press note around the 12th of each month at mospi.gov.in → Press Releases → CPI.
  • For a quarter, average the three monthly YoY inflation rates. For a financial year, average all twelve (Apr–Mar).
  • Cross-check with RBI's Database on Indian Economy (dbie.rbi.org.in) → Prices and Wages → CPI.

2 · Benchmark returns

  • Nifty 50: use the Total Return / price index closing level from NSE indices; SEBI's Handbook of Statistics carries yearly index returns.
  • Sensex: BSE index archives, or RBI's Handbook of Statistics on the Indian Economy (financial-market tables).
  • S&P 500 (optional): closing levels from S&P Dow Jones Indices. Return = (End ÷ Start) − 1.

3 · Your portfolio

  • List every contribution (negative) and withdrawal (positive) with its date in the XIRR panel.
  • Enter the closing market value and the period end date; copy the resulting MWR into the Portfolio nominal % column.
  • The Real % column recalculates automatically. Export CSV each period to keep an offline archive.

Cadence: update quarterly within ~3 weeks of quarter end (once CPI for the final month is published), and lock the full-year row after the March CPI release. Sample figures shown are illustrative — replace them with official data.
